Keywords in a blog are one of , if not THE, most important ingredient in a blog post. It is critical that you use keywords that will generate results. Millions of people search Google for your site every month; good keywords will ensure they find it.
I struggled with keywords for a while too, so I know where you’re coming from. I’ve boiled it down to a simple formula:
Situation #1 – A Blast from the Past Link
If you’re linking to an old blog post, use words from the old posts title as the anchor text (the words you use for the link).
If you wanted to link to a post titled “Premium Fitness Hosts UFC 119 at Buffalo Wild Wings” then for the link back to it in the new post would be something like “don’t forget: we’re watching UFC 119 at Buffalo Wild Wing Saturday”. And the phrase ” UFC 119 at Buffalo Wild Wing” is the anchor text.
Situation #2 – Location, Location, Location!
Another type of link is the geographical link. Geo keywords are key. No pun intended. These are the ones your blog needs most.
Your anchor text should never be just “Jiu Jitsu”. Millions of people search for Jiu Jitsu every month on google, so it’s just not a great keyword.
But “jiu jitsu in Palmdale” is very specific to a localized region. Not very many people search for that, comparatively, so the ones who do will likely find your blog.
So even if your just linking to the cardio kickboxing class page on your site, use “cardio kickboxing in Palmdale” or “Palmdale cardio kickboxing classes” or whatever as your anchor text.
It takes a little effort to fit them in to your post sometimes, but it pays off in search results.
Situation #3 – A Square Peg in a Round Hole
Sometimes though, you’ll need to do a link that doesn’t fit these guidelines quite right. In that case, pick the most descriptive anchor text you can that describes what you’re linking to.
For instance, Market & Convert is national, so local keywords don’t always apply. In that case, I would link to our page at the bottom of the post with the keywords “small business internet marketing” or “local business internet marketing” or maybe “Pay-Per-Click Management.”
All of those are valid and descriptive keywords that describe fairly precisely what our company does. And they are specific enough to catch a focused market that will likely benefit from our services.
And for any link, limit it to five words not including prepositions, conjunctions or other “little” words.
And remember, if you struggle with keywords or blogging in general, you could always call Market & Convert for all your small business internet marketing needs. Pretty nice use of keywords there, huh?
Some more examples of solid anchor text can be found in some of the blogs we maintain. Check out the links for Corolla oceanfront homes, the best Outer Banks Wedding Photographers, or Nags Head luxury homes.
And while your here, and since this info was undoubtedly of use to you, or not, why don’t you leave a comment? Also a good idea would be to visit our Facebook page and hit the like button.Or how about you sign up for our RSS feed? That way you’ll always get the freshest content from the Market & Convert blog.
